| Hurtigruten Minute by Minute - watch Norway's coastline flow by in realtime |
[17 Jun 2011|11:01pm] |
"After months of planning and technical preparation, state broadcaster NRK went live Thursday night with its marathon coverage of a Hurtigruten voyage from Bergen north to the line’s turnaround point in Kirkenes. Viewers will be able to follow every minute of the trip on NRK’s channel 2, until it ends on Wednesday morning." Views and News from Norway
You can join your free Norwegian sea cruise here: http://www.nrk.no/hurtigruten/?lang=en
It is staggeringly beautiful if I may say so, even to us who live here. I have traveled with Hurtigruten (The Fast Route) several times, but am still amazed by the view. You might enjoy it too. :)
ETA: It will sail by my home Monday morning. I promise to wave back at you then. \o/

| Scandafandom: Fandom in Scandinavian |
[30 May 2011|09:29pm] |
Hi. I'd like to promote scandafandom: a fandom community for Scandinavian languages.
From the forum's own description (translated from Norwegian): "Do you speak Norwegian, Swedish or Danish? Are you active in fandom? This is the place for you then! Here you can meet other Scandinavians and talk about fandom related stuff (...) 3. You are welcome as long as you speak a Scandinavian language - you don't have to be Danish, Norwegian or Swedish to join."
As you can see, posting must be done in a Scandinavian language. A great place to practice your Scandinavian and have fun at the same time, in other words. :)))
In Norwegian: Heisann :) Jeg vil gjerne få reklamere litt for scandafandom: et forum for fandom på skandinavisk.

[05 Sep 2010|06:59pm] |
Dear people, help me! I have to hold a presentation next week on language around the Øresund region. I have absolutely no idea what I should talk about -- and where to start looking. I'm absolutely helpless, I can't even acces academical books at the moment. Any kind of clue would be highly appreciated! You'd be saving my life.
x-posted, sorry.

| Norway and Finland - making cinnamon buns |

Does anyone know if there is a fundamental difference between Norwegian and Finnish cinnamon buns? I've been looking at some recipes and they seem to include the same ingredients, but I think they look a slightly different shape somehow. Is there a different way of slicing up the pastry, or am I completely imagining things?

| Feminism in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland? |
[07 May 2010|06:42pm] |
Just trying to gauge a general feeling, but do any women (young women in particular) call themselves 'feminist' in the Nordic countries? Is feminism a bad word, is the concept considered outdated?
I am interested as it seems there is more equality between the genders in the Nordic countries than in the UK. In the UK 'feminist' seems to have become a slur against women who dare to suggest there is still inequality!
Any thoughts appreciated! (x-posted to the Denmark comm)

The following is a little photojournal of a weekend trip in Northern Scandinavia. I hope this is allowed, just wanted to share. :)
The North-Scandinavian Roadtrip, 2009!

We were so restless. We had to go somewhere.
What better place than across the border and into reindeer county?
( a huge photopost! )
All in all, we drove a good 906 km and shopped a lot of strange stuff!
I recommend it!

| Norway - Health food/Organic food shops |
[09 Aug 2009|01:30pm] |
Hello all,
We'll be travelling around Norway soon, and I am looking around for organic and health food shops to get stuff like bread and fresh fruit from in northern Norway, and I'm not sure whether the ones I've found sell food or are just vitamin shops.
Does anyone here know what the difference is between Helios, Naturli Vis, Life and Sunkost?
What ones generally have a better range of food?
Are there any others I should look out for?
Thanks in advance,
CWaldgeist

| East of Norway? |
[01 Aug 2009|09:30pm] |
Hello! If anybody can help me, it would be really great. Please, could you advise some places to be seeing in the east (southeast) of Norway, rather some nature-places, or castles, or castle's ruins and so on? Something interesting and (maybe) historical, if there are fjords there, it would be absolutely perfect. Thanks!

| Scandi-overload! |
[27 Jun 2009|10:25pm] |
My parents are visiting me in Copenhagen in a few weeks. They're going to be here for 11 days but we're traveling and will really only have five full days in the country of Denmark.
My mom has a crap-ton of ideas about what she wants to do, but the problem is, I think she's really stretching the timeline. For example, she wants to go to Ærø, but also Malmö and possibly Lund and/or Helsingborg. And then of course we have to do all the things in Copenhagen like Tivoli, Nyhavn, etc. I kind of think it would be neat to take them to Odense, but they haven't shown interest.
What would be a good strategy to go about all this? I'm not that keen on going to Ærø just because it takes 3 or 4 hours to get there and that would take an entire day, but is it worth it to go? What types of things can you do there? My family isn't really the outdoorsy type and there's no way we'd be able to bike long distances.
I'm not good at being a tourist and structuring my days...any help?

| Master's Programmes in Sweden |
[19 Jun 2009|12:02am] |

Is anyone here an American studying at a Swedish university? If so, are there still no tuition fees? I was perusing the Stockholm University website and that's what I've gathered from it...but it seems to good to be true. Surely there's got to be some sort of catch! If I've somehow misread this, please feel free to enlighten me. Is the acceptance rate for foreign students rather low?

| Fun with Flybus (Reykjavik) |
[20 May 2009|02:54pm] |
This is kind of random but has anyone here had a layover in Reykjavik and used the time to go into the city for a couple of hours?
I have an 8-hour layover at the airport and am wondering if I'd be too pressed for time to go into the city. I have been there before and it's my favorite city in the world and just walking up and down Laugavegur would be amazing.

| Uppsala University and Gothenburg University!, Advice needed on choosing between them. |
[28 Apr 2009|10:42am] |
Hi everybody!
I seriously need a piece of advice! Yesterday evening I've got a mail from The School of Business, Economics, and Law, University of Gothenburg (not an e-mail, a post mail!) They manage admissions outside of studera system (due to the incompatibility of deadlines). I have been admitted to the M.Sc. in Industrial Management. At the same time I have SG=DA & MR=999 for Uppsala Uni, MSc in Economics, as far as I understand this means very high chance of being admitted. I know that in general Uppsala is much more prestigious than Gothenburg, but The School of Business, Economics, and Law is quite separate and also very good. Not being very familiar with the situation of Swedish university rankings, I would like to have some suggestions on the matter. Thanks for advance for any help!
